1950’s McCoy “Butterfly” Spoon Rest #100
Utilitarian shapes and purpose have always been a part of art pottery’s design and interpretation. For McCoy Pottery, simplicity in
presentation and orientation have always occupied a certain segment of their lines. Called a Butterfly Spoon Rest, this is but one example that highlights that genre. Fired in a desirable green gloss glaze, its namesake occupies the lower portion of the rest and serves as the handle. Bordering each side moving upward is a pair of leafy foliage with the base of the rest mimicking a larger leaf. It is 7 3/4″ long, 4″ across at its widest point and has a factory hole at the top for hanging. The elements are incised, embossed and shaded for additional visual interest and depth.
There is some dark crackling and discoloration on the cradle portion that is under the glaze. This type of factory imperfection is atypical of McCoy pieces. There are several small chips on the leaf tips along with a larger one adjacent to the hanging hole presumably caused by use. It is marked with the familiar McCoy logo on the underside.
This whimsical spoon rest would make a great addition to your culinary utensils, as a stand alone decoration or as an addition to your art pottery collection.
