All Boyd Glass is marked with the Boyd Diamond B logo. If it is not marked with the Boyd logo then it is a reproduction or copycat piece.
What is being offered now is the Boyd Glass Owl in the color Rubina Slag that you can see glows a little bit by a blacklight. This was color number 78 in the series of colors run in this mould and was made on 1/16/1986. This color
was made at the time when Bernard Boyd Sr. loved to throw chunks of other
colors of glass into the tank of molten glass while the workers were pressing
pieces. These chunks of colored glass would melt into the molten glass, and as
the gatherer twirled his punty rod into the tank to gather glass out to be
pressed, the melting chunks of glass would get slagged into the molten glass on
his punty rod. That slag glass would then be pressed into the mould. Every
piece would look different from the next due to the different colors of glass
slagging into each other. With this color he had to stand by the tank all day
throwing different chunks of glass into the tank while we worked. And parts of
it even glow a little by a blacklight. We are listing quite a bit of Boyd Glass this week and do combine shipments to save you shipping money so make sure to see it all! And the Boyd’s never repeated a color in any mould so that makes Boyd Glass highly collectible.
The Boyd Factory and showroom are now closed and the Boyd’s have removed the Boyd Diamond B logo from all of their moulds. They also sold all of the moulds. Since they took the logo off of the moulds that means no more Boyd Glass items can ever be made which makes Boyd Glass even more highly collectible.
This piece measures about 3 1/4 inches tall and is marked with the Diamond B of Boyd Glass with a line under the Diamond B which shows it was made in the 2nd five years of the Boyd operation. This beautiful piece of glass has no cracks or chips, the shiny places are reflected lighting. As with any hand pressed piece of glass, this piece may have some air bubbles, but absolutely no cracks or chips.
I worked at Boyd Crystal Art Glass in Cambridge for a number of years. I was employed there from about 1979 to 1987. For those of you that came to the Boyd Glass factory in that time period, I was the tall, thin, moustache faced, 20-something year old that worked in the factory. If you took the “tour”, I was probably the employee working on the production line that explained the glass process to you while you watched us work. The time I spent at Boyd Glass is a memorable time in my life that I will not forget. I told my wife that the glass I purchased while employed at Boyd’s and since then would be sold to help pay for our two daughters college educations and even though they have both graduated, we will be paying off the debt for some time to come and my wife is making sure that I keep to my plan. I will be putting some of the items I purchased up for sale on Ebay. I have a lot of older Boyd pieces, and some of the newer ones. I will be putting them on as I unpack them from the boxes I stored them in, or take them off the shelves in our home, find them at sales or get them at the Boyd factory. They will not be in any particular order. These will all be first quality Boyd Glass, with no cracks or chips, and will make a great addition to any collection. If any of you remember me from Boyd’s, please bid on this and help my daughter’s college fund. GOOD LUCK!
